I read a couple of pages and already felt bad for the main character, Ruby. If I had to be put in her shoes there is no way I would ever go. I would rather run away than go live with someone I don't know even if he is my father. And the guy picking his nose is disgusting. Honestly he should have some courtesy and go in the bathroom. When Ruby talks about her mother I feel so terrible because I wonder if anything ever happened to my mother, would I notice all the little everyday things that I normally ignore? Then when Ruby tries to comprehend the feelings her mother might have been going through when she was dying, it makes me think if that is the way I will feel.
I really love the main character Ruby, because she isn't trying to make this an everyday sad sob book about a young girl who lose's her mother and goes to live with her long lost dad. Sonya does an incredible job by creating Ruby's character as a to-the-point person. No misteries, no lies, nothing but the truth. I because bad for Ruby because of her situation. I am feeling such ampathy towards her character.
Sorry for the Odd Blogger name, but this is Amanda. Anyways, I really love how Sonya Sones makes Ruby have similar interests as her dad. It's pretty funny how upset Ruby gets over the littlest things like on page 59 how she finds out her dad collects classic cars and previously on pages 36 and 37 when both Ruby and Whip are revealed to love the ocean. To move foreward a bit, I like how Ruby emails her mom. I would probably do the same thing just to feel like I could always talk to her. I feel terrible that her mom died but I think make what this book is about is the experience to get to know her dad and some people deserve second chances? I don't know, just a little guess. What do you girls think of Whip so far? I think he is a scum bag for leaving but I think he is trying to be a good father but is a little out of practice.
I also feel really bad for the main character because she lost her mother and she is taking it really hard. I almost cried when Ruby started talking about her mother because she was really sad. I also liked how Ruby sent e-mails to her mother, I probably would have done the same thing in that kind of situation. That way I could still feel like my mother was still alive and still in my life. I like and I dislike Whip! I don't like that he abondoned Ruby for so many years because a father should be there for his daughter but I like him becasue he is really trying to be there for her now. He is trying to be a good dad and at the moment he isn't doing that bad of a job. I was wondering if u guys think that Ruby and her boyfriend, Ray are going to last for a long time? I don't think that they are because either him or her are going to meet someone else and want to go out with them and not feel like they are tied down over a long distance relationship! Long distance relationships don't usually last because they people are so far away from each other.
Amanda, i agree, because my favorite part about Ruby's life is the fact that it is impossible to run away from her and her father's similarities. It is almost like Ruby hates him but she hates liking him even more. She completely refuses to ever even think of liking him. I think that she believes that liking her father would be like betraying her dead mother, which is one of her biggest fears. I also noticed that Ruby is in pure denial and she refuses to believe that her mother is dead. Well, she knows but yet she continues to treat her mother's soul as if nothing had happened. I guess it's her only way of dealing with things. After all, she has no one who really knows what she's going through!
I thought that itwas interesting how similar Ruby and her father were! I also think that maybe her father wanted to be in her life earlier but felt ashamed that he left. So, now I think that he is trying to make up for lost times but Ruby doesn't want to forgive him! I think that Ruby will eventually find it in her heart to forgive him but it might just take a little while!
I hate how Ruby HAD to call Ray. If he really missed her, he would have called her everyday. But I think like in The Lovely Bones Mr. Salmon tries to talk to Susie through his diary, while Ruby talks to her mother through her diary as well. But I simply LOVE LOVE LOVE Max. I think it's awesome that Ruby can confide in him and she isn't exactly alone!
I love that on page 130 Ruby gets a ticket for not being in the crosswalk. "Oh. My. God. I just got a ticket for crossing the street." Page 130 If that law applied here I would be getting TONS of tickets. Tehe. I feel bad that Ruby is now secluded from her Californian friends now that she can actually hang with them. I am super glad that she didn't get mauled by a ferocious palm leaf! I don't know if you guys agree but I feel so bad for Whip when Ruby slams the door in his face on page 146. Ruby should feel some guilt when she sees him crying on page 147. What a cold hearted girl! Yay.. A few pages later. 155, they have all made up. I predict by the end of the book Ruby will really appreciate her dad. On page 159 Ruby makes a connection to Holden Caulfied in the Catcher in the Rye and I think I must agree with her. From her perspective in Califorinia people are just trying to be her friend because she is famous like the guy in the convienence store. The ironic element that Sonya Sones adds is that Ruby says, " Holden Caulfield's just a character in a book. But I am real . I'm made of flesh and blood and bone." When in reality Ruby is just a character in a book too! But I think I can relate to Ruby more than Holden because she is more down to Earth and is a girl. After all, women are from Venus and men are from Mars.
On page 161 where Ruby compares Feather to her mother it reminds me of The Lovely Bones where Susie in Heaven treats Franny like her mother on page 41 saying "I knew that she was not my mother; I could not play pretend." [Sebold 41]. To move foreward a bit to page 163 I hope Ruby and Wyatt get together. She deserves a closer boyfriend, but I would SO kill him if he put a unmentional in my hand but I love how she turns it around into an act. Brava Ruby, brava! I had to look up Pygmalion , and found out it to be a play that is based on a myth that revolves around human relationships in a social world written by Bernard Shaw. To go on to page 167, I think Ruby has a right to flirt because I don't think Ray is being the 'Oh so faithful' boyfriend. Then on page 168 Ruby subconsciously notes that her and Ray are drifting apart because of their distance. P.S I hope Whip and Cameron Diaz get together!
Hey girls! Remember when we had our first book club and predicted that Ray will either dump Ruby for Lizzie or Amber? I think Ray is preparing for the break up. On page 170 Ruby states in a letter that "I haven't heard from Ray in like three days." and then on the next page Lizzie "watches him the whole time" So I think maybe instead of Amber, Ray is looking for comfort of his girlfriend leaving through the next best thing. A-ha! I knew Ruby was drifting away from Ray because on page 176 she says "I love Ray. I really do. Only I don't know if I love him enough ." I think the death of Ruby's mother made her reflect on all the warnings she used to be given because she won't ever hear them again. So I believe that Ruby is going to try to follow along her mothers advice on boys. I am glad that Ruby is still humble though instead of instantly being a rich snobby girl. Like when she buys 36 star maps on pages 185-186 to help the Latino guy out. I think it is rather strange when Lizzie is writing the E-mail with Ray that Ray doesn't say he loves Ruby. That is AWEFULLY suspicious to me if he was supposed to love her SO much. And I wonder who this mysterious Ripley is? Girls do you have an ideas as to when we might meet this Ripley guy and to who is he? Will he be introduced later or he is previously mentioned?!
So how is everyone today? I just picked up the book again and started reading at page 198 but I think it's cute how Whip tries accomidate Ray for his daughter. I really hope that Ray doesn't disappoint Ruby. Wow on the next page it has been six days. Maybe my previous post about Ray and Lizzie is true. OH MY GOOD I KNEW IT! LIZZIE AND RAY DID HAVE AN AFFAIR. I OFFICIALLY HATE THEM BOTH! My extreme anger and hatred through capital letters. I think if I was in Ruby's shoes I would react with the same anger to everyone. I would probably tear up photos and throw them away and lock myself in my room. Ruby's heart is broken and I feel terrible. She lost her mother and now her best friend AND boyfriend.
Hello ladies! What we thought was going to happen, did in fact actually happen. We thought that Ray and Lizzie would start going out and they did! I knew the second Lizzie called Ruby, they were going out because she was being quiet and was crying. I agree with Amanda, I hate them both. If they really cared for Ruby at all, they wouldn't have done that to her at all. Ray supposedly was in love with Ruby and was miserable without her, so what does he do, he goes and hooks up with Ruby's best friend Lizzie. Also, best friends are not supposed to hook up with their best friends boyfriend ever, especially when they are all the way on the other side of the country. I don't think that Ruby should ever forgive Lizzie for stabbing her in the back and definitly not forgive Ray. What they did was evil and neither one of them should be forgave. After thinking the worse that could possibly happen was over when she lost her mother, now she lost the only things that she had left her best friend Lizzie and her boyfriend Ray. I got so angry when I read this. I know that if my best friend ever did this to me, I would never forgive them, it is unforgivable. After reading that I lost all respect for Lizzie and especially Ray!
Hello everyone! I was wondering what everyone thought about the way Ruby was treating her father when he just wanted to help her? I think that she should let him into her life because he is the only parent that she has left in the world. I know that he left her mother and her and went to california but I think that she needs to get over that now. Ruby should put it all in the past. Its time to forget and move on! I think that it is wierd that even though both Ray and Lizzie broke her heart, it seems as if she still cares about them and still wants to be their friend. It seems that way because when something happened at school, she wanted to call Lizzie and tell her all about it. I think that in the end, Ray is going to dump Lizzie for Amber and Ruby and Lizzie will become best friends again! I just have a feeling! What do you girls think?
I absolutely love Ruby's character, she's so misterious. Like on page 164, i had no idea whether she was being serious or was she acting? I personally believe that she really was acting. But i don't understand, why was she complaining about buying condoms? Maybe Ray used to tell her to buy condoms "just-in-case"! Either way, i think that she's a great actor.....just like her father. Coincidence????
I wasn't so suprised when Lizzie called and said that she and Ray had been fooling around. I saw it coming in the past couple of pages where Lizzie sent Ruby an e-mail telling her that she was working on a project with Ray (p187). Besides Lizzie did say that she wathches him "closely" (p93). I automatically knew what that meant. I could only imagine what Ruby was feeling because not only did her boyfriend leave her for another girl, but her boyfriend left her for her best friend. That's one of the worst feelings in the world. Her anger gave her an excuse to be even ruder to Whip, and a VIP pass to shuting him out of her life. Poor Ruby!
My eyes crossed by this quote from the book saying: " Homeless man will make love to your wife or girlfriend for free food and lodging for the night" (p223). I thought it was the funniest thing in the world and i wanted to share it with everyone. I guess it's my way of saying that even though this book may be a sad story about a young girl, it could also be one of the funniest books ever made. I found myself laughing histerically on the bus all alone. people definitly thought i was crazy! :) I even thought it was funny when i found out that Whip was gay. Now i understand the whole sad scene where Whip was crying in front of Ruby's window! i love this book! :)
Hello Everyone! OMG! I can't believe that Whip is gay. I never saw it coming. I seriously thought that he was going out with Cameron Diaz. I was so suprised that that Whip was not straight! Wow, and I couldn't believe that on top of all that, Whip's real name is Ripley and he is going out with Max. I am so happy that it is Max though because Max is an awesome person and ruby loves him. This all was such a shocker but a really nice one! I am glad that Whip is a really good guy instead of a jerk! I think that he is going to be a good father to Ruby!
Hey Ladies, I think that Lizzie is full of crap in her e-mail to Ruby because it seems like the whole e-mail is a lie. I think that she wasn't really sorry but after Ray dumped her, she decided to become friends with Ruby again. I can't believe that Ruby forgave her because she betrayed her. If I was in that situation i wouldn't forgive her because that almost happened to me before with one of my best friends! I don't think something like that is forgivable. Lizzie just annoyed me and I lost all respect for her after she did that. I am so glad though that Ruby actually learned to like her father, its about time. Whip is areally good guy at heart and was truely sorry for leaving Ruby. Overall, I loved the book. This was my favorite book of the year. When I was reading the book, I just couldn't put it down, it was that good. I would definitely reccomend tis book to all teenagers!
That last ending was amazing!!!!! I was so schocked how in her dream, when her mother told her to get out, she was really trying to save her daughter's life. Especially when she went out by the tree and there was an earthquake, and when she got home she realized that the bookshelf fell on her bed where her head was supposed to be. I am not trying to be pessimistic but how can she just forgive her father like that? That, i think was what ruined the eneding for me. It just seemed so unrealistic. It was an unrealistic ending to me, similar to "Cinderella", or "Snow White". Life isn't like that in reality. This book started out too realistically to end so much like a fiction. Other than that i loved the book, and i definitly would recommend this book to incomming freshmen or sophmores because it would give them a chance to judge for themselves whether a book was good or not. It would give them a chance to observe the structure of the book more than just its content. It was a great learning opportunity for me. Bye!
